الملخص :Many Syrian learners of English (SLE) evidently encounter some difficulties when perceiving as well as producing natural English speech. In fact, such difficulties may be the result of sound changes in certain utterances when they occur in the course of connected speech (CS).

In this regard, several studies have been conducted to examine different strategies that may help learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) to handle connected speech processes (CSPs) properly. Thus, this study comes as a further step in investigating this phenomenon and how it is learnt by SLE. Similar to other studies applied to other participants from different linguistic backgrounds, this study hypothesizes that using an audio visual (AV) method can also improve the perception and production skills of those SLE in the field of CS after receiving an audio visual (AV) training. To test this hypothesis, this study was conducted in a language laboratory at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Al-Baath University. Twenty fourth-year students of English were selected at random to participate in this study. They were divided into two groups (ten students each): The first group is the control group (CG), which received no training, while the second group is the experimental group (AVG), which received an (AV) training. The CG had been selected merely to measure the improvement achieved by the AVG through comparing their performance in all tests.

For this purpose, a pre-test, a post-test and a delayed-test design was also applied to evaluate their progress immediately before and after the training and one month after the training. Data of the current study were collected by making participants of both groups undergo three tests, namely the pre-test, the post-test and the delayed-test. Moreover, to answer the questions raised by the current study, these data were analysed statistically and acoustically. In the perception part, data were statistically analysed, while in the production part, on the other hand, these data were acoustically analysed after statistically analysed. The purpose of the acoustic analysis was to validate the rating procedure, which in turn, was the basis for the statistical analysis in the production part. The acoustic analysis was carried out via the Praat software. Therefore, this study attempts to evaluate the results obtained from SLE performance after receiving AV training in both perception and production of these CSPs. It also seeks to measure the progress made by these learners when dealing with new contexts. In conclusion, this study reveals that using the AV method is an effective strategy in improving the skills of SLE in both perception and production of CSPs.
