Student Shams Ahmed, a student of the Faculty of Health Sciences and a Syrian team taekwondo player, won the bronze medal in the 2023 Summer World University Games Championship held in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg.
President of Al Baath University, Prof. Abdul Basit Al Khatib, praised this achievement which is added to the achievements of the university distinguished students, calling on students to make efforts for achieving more athletic excellence and to commit to the academic excellenc during their studies. He also pointed to the importance of spreading sports awareness within the student community, restoring the position of universities in the sports arena at the national, regional and international levels. He also emphasized that the university provides all of the support possible for the excellence of students at all levels.
Head of Taekwondo Federation, Sherif Derki, said that Shams who participated in the World University Championship via the National Union of Syrian Students is a distinguished player and has won various medals in local and Arab championships.
It is noteworthy that Summer World University Games Championship is hosted by Russia and in the presence of Syria, along with most of the university teams in the world, and includes 14 types of different sports.
